A proprietary system of self-management, developed by Brian Robertson from 2007, that organises a company into nested circles of roles governed by a written constitution and consent-based governance meetings.

In more detail

Holacracy adapts sociocratic ideas to firms. Authority is assigned to roles rather than people, roles are grouped in circles, and governance meetings change roles and policies through an integrative decision process in which objections are tested. Its best-known adopter, the retailer Zappos, offered buyouts to staff who did not wish to work under it in 2015. Management researchers report gains in clarity and agility for some firms, but also rigidity and role proliferation, and most adopters blend it with conventional hierarchy.
