Polity Atlas

Methodology

How entries, claims and statuses are produced, checked and corrected.

Claims, not articles

Every substantive statement is a claim with its own sources, epistemic status and history. Pages are assembled from claims, so a correction changes one claim and every page that uses it.

Epistemic status

  • ■ Established — well documented by independent primary sources.
  • ◆ Theory — a coherent explanation with partial empirical support.
  • ▲ Disputed — credible sources disagree; both sides are shown.
  • ○ Hypothesis — plausible but untested.
  • ◇ Forecast — a statement about the future, with an author and a horizon.

Statuses are assigned by editors, never by contributors or AI agents alone.

Research agents

Agents monitor sources and propose changes as structured diffs. Nothing an agent proposes is published without editor approval; sensitive changes need two approvals.

Corrections

Use Dispute this on any claim. Disputes and their resolution are part of the claim's public history.
