TheoryGeddes (1999) argued that single-party regimes are the most resilient type of dictatorship, military regimes the least, and personalist regimes in between, because each type's elite has different interests when facing crises.EstablishedGeddes (1999) classified authoritarian regimes as personalist, military, single-party or amalgams of these, a typology she later extended with Joseph Wright and Erica Frantz into a dataset of 280 autocratic regimes from 1946 to 2010.TheoryComparative research finds that personalist dictatorships are more likely than party-based or military regimes to end violently or to be replaced by another autocracy, and less likely to democratise.TheoryMilitary regimes have on average been the shortest-lived type of dictatorship since 1946, and are more likely than other types to negotiate their exit when the officer corps splits, because officers value the unity of the armed forces over holding office.
