An incumbent's attempt to remain in office beyond a constitutional term limit, typically by amending the constitution, adopting a new one, obtaining a favourable court ruling or delaying elections.
In more detail
A survey of attempts since 2000 by Versteeg and co-authors found that roughly a third of incumbents who reached the end of their term tried to stay on, nearly always through formally legal procedures rather than open violation. About a third of attempts failed, most often because of popular protest rather than judicial resistance. The Venice Commission has concluded that removing or extending presidential limits in a way that benefits the incumbent is contrary to European constitutional standards.
