Term limit

A legal restriction on the number of terms, or the total time, a person may serve in a particular office.

In more detail

Limits may be consecutive, allowing a return after a break, or lifetime, as with the two-term limit on the US presidency set by the 22nd Amendment in 1951. Single-term rules, such as Mexico's for its president, forbid any re-election. Limits are meant to prevent entrenchment and ensure alternation in power, especially for powerful executives. Critics argue that they reduce experience, restrict voters' choices and shift influence to unelected staff and lobbyists.
