Established
D'Annunzio set out from Ronchi on 12 September 1919 with a small column (one account gives 186 men) that grew to about 2,500 within days; in December 1919 he nullified a plebiscite that had approved the Italian government's modus vivendi, and he proclaimed the Regency on 8 September 1920.

Disputed
Michael Ledeen argues that D'Annunzio devised at Fiume much of the liturgy later used by Fascism, including 'the balcony address, the Roman salute, the cries of aia, aia, aia, alala', dramatic dialogues with the crowd and religious symbols in a secular setting.
