“D'Annunzio set out from Ronchi on 12 September 1919 with a small column (one account gives 186 men) that grew to about 2,500 within days; in December 1919 he nullified a plebiscite that had approved the Italian government's modus vivendi, and he proclaimed the Regency on 8 September 1920.”

Context. Treccani's Dizionario di Storia dates D'Annunzio's proclamation of the Regency to 12 August 1920; 8 September 1920 is the date usually given for its formal proclamation with the Carta del Carnaro.
