An independent public officer with a statutory duty to represent the interests of future generations by advising and reviewing public bodies; Wales created such an office under its 2015 Act.
In more detail
In Wales the Commissioner is to be a guardian of the ability of future generations to meet their needs (s 18). The office may review how public bodies contribute to the seven well-being goals and make recommendations (s 20); bodies must take reasonable steps to follow them or publish reasons (s 22). This works by persuasion and scrutiny, not veto. Audit Wales (2020) found uneven integration of long-term thinking across bodies.
