“The term 'Cossack democracy' accurately describes the Sich as an egalitarian polity.”

Context. Elective, recallable office and formal equality among Cossacks were real, but only unmarried men lived in the Sich, poor Cossacks were kept out of council deliberations, and by the mid-eighteenth century a wealthy stratum supplied most officers. The label owes much to later national narratives.
