■
Established
After expelling Prince Vsevolod Mstislavich in 1136, Novgorod invited princes under sworn agreements and was governed through its veche and elected officials (the posadnik and tysiatskii), while from the mid-twelfth century the Novgorodians chose their own bishop, raised to archbishop in 1165.
▲
Disputed
Novgorod's sovereign political community, whose will the veche expressed, was in effect its boyars, so that Novgorod is best called a 'boyar republic'.
■
Established
Ivan III ended the republic in 1478, abolishing the veche and elected offices, installing governors and removing the veche bell to Moscow; leading families were later deported and their lands confiscated.
