EstablishedIn 1863 co-operative societies of northern England, with Rochdale delegates taking part and Abraham Greenwood of Rochdale as a leading promoter, formed the North of England Co-operative Wholesale Society, later the CWS; the Pioneers' own ventures were enrolled under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1852 (15 & 16 Vict. c. 31).
