■
Established
Machiavelli served the Florentine Republic as Second Chancellor from 1498 until the Medici restoration of 1512; The Prince was written at the end of 1513 and published posthumously in 1532, and the Discourses on Livy were published in 1531.
■
Established
In the Discourses Machiavelli argued that the conflicts between the Roman nobles and people were the source of Rome's liberty rather than its ruin, and that a people is more prudent and stable than a prince.
