“Interpretations diverge: Marx's The Civil War in France called the Commune the working-class political form 'at last discovered', anarchists such as Bakunin read it as a rebellion against the state, and Victor Hugo criticised its conduct while urging amnesty.”
Context. Marx later wrote privately that most of the Commune was not socialist and that a compromise with Versailles had been possible.
