- Ranked-choice voting (instant-runoff)MechanismVoters rank candidates; the lowest-placed candidate is eliminated round by round and ballots transfer until one has a majority. Used for Australia's House of Representatives, Maine, Alaska and New York City primaries.
- Recall electionMechanismA procedure by which voters can remove an elected official before the end of the term, usually after a petition and a popular vote. Governors were recalled in North Dakota (1921) and California (2003); Newsom survived in 2021.
- Retroactive public goods fundingMechanismFunding public goods after they have proved useful, on the premise that it is easier to agree on what was valuable than on what will be. Popularised by the Optimism Collective from 2021, whose rounds have distributed tens of millions of tokens to hundreds of projects chosen by badgeholders.
